Manchester United should have signed Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Christian Eriksen during the summer, according to Paul Scholes.

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has claimed that the Red Devils should have signed Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Christian Eriksen during the summer transfer window.

Eriksen - out of contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium at the end of this season - was linked with a move to United before the window slammed shut on Thursday.

Scholes has said that he "was quite excited" to learn that the Red Devils could sign the Denmark international, but the former Ajax youngster ultimately remained with Mauricio Pochettino's side.

"I was quite excited when Christian Eriksen got mentioned," Scholes told BBC Sport. "He could have made a big difference to United in the way [Kevin] De Bruyne plays for City, creating chances and scoring goals."

Eriksen could still leave Spurs for another European club in the coming weeks, though, with potential suitors Real Madrid having until the start of September to complete their transfer business.

The 27-year-old scored 10 times and contributed 17 assists in 51 appearances for Tottenham during the 2018-19 campaign.
