Frenkie de Jong is staying at Barcelona despite the widespread speculation surrounding his future this summer, according to a report.

Frenkie de Jong is staying with Barcelona this summer despite the widespread speculation surrounding his future, according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The Netherlands international has been strongly linked with Manchester United since the end of May, with the club's head coach Erik ten Hag thought to have identified him as his leading summer target.

Chelsea and Liverpool have also been credited with an interest in the midfielder, who is believed to be owed in the region of £17m by Barcelona in deferred wages.

However, De Jong has resisted an exit during the summer market, and according to Romano, the Dutchman will be staying at Camp Nou past the transfer deadline.

The 25-year-old, who still has four years left to run on his contract with Xavi's side, has made three league appearances at the start of the 2022-23 campaign.

De Jong started the clash with Real Sociedad on August 21, which ended in a 4-1 win for the Catalan giants, while he has come off the bench in the clashes with Rayo Vallecano and Real Valladolid.

The central midfielder moved to Barcelona from Ajax in July 2019, and he has represented the club on 143 occasions in all competitions, contributing 13 goals and 18 assists in the process.

Man United are still believed to be interested in the Dutchman, though, and a recent report claimed that the club could again attempt to bring him to Old Trafford in a later transfer window.
