Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher says that the officials 'overcomplicated' a decision regarding Callum Wilson's goal for Bournemouth against West Ham.

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has suggested that the officials in the Premier League clash between Bournemouth and West Ham United failed to apply "basic" rules.

During added-on time, Callum Wilson scored to secure a 3-3 draw for Bournemouth, despite netting from an offside position and the ball striking the top of his arm.

The decision has been widely criticised, and Gallagher has indicated that referee Bobby Madley should have shown more trust in his assistant, who had initially put his flag up when Wilson scored from close range.

Gallagher told Sky Sports News: "It is a very tight offside call, but once [referee's assistant] Simon Long calls that, the basics should just happen, whistle give offside. It became too complicated after that.

"The debate was if he is in an offside position, has he interfered? He has interfered. Has the ball touched him? And it became too protracted and I think the easiest thing was the flag goes up, Simon was convinced it was offside, he is in the best position to judge offside. And the referee really should have just given offside and we would not be talking about that.

"But unfortunately the conversation took place and there was too much information being given by each party, it seemed to go on too long. And in the end, they came to the conclusion that Wilson had not touched the ball, which was incorrect anyhow as he did touch the ball and it also went in off his arm."

The draw means that West Ham only hold a one-point lead over Bournemouth, who sit in the relegation zone.
