Basketball, wheelchair fencing receive Olympic funding

Great Britain will be represented in the basketball and wheelchair fencing events at the 2016 Rio Olympic and Paralympic Games, following successful appeals to UK Sport.

British Basketball will receive Olympic funding following an appeal to UK Sport.

Basketball received £8.6m in the four years before London 2012, but in December it was announced that all funding would cease.

However, UK Sport's U-turn means that Great Britain will now be able to run an elite basketball programme targeted at the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

Wheelchair fencing was also successful in an appeal.

Both sports' awards will be on a one-year conditional basis, meaning that the final three years' funding will only be released if strict performance criteria are met.
